I don’t care what it is. A used Panamera, a new S-class, or a 1986 Cavalier. What is your FIRST choice within your potential budget, given that it wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg to maintain?
Also, no need to explain your “budget” — what your can afford, what you’re willing to afford, what you can “technically” afford — I AM NOT HERE TO JUDGE.
I’ll start things off:
Option 1: BJ73 LHD
Option 2: used A7
What say you?

Had two 740s. Can confirm it was the only gauge that ever worked in the cluster.

Here are a couple of my favorites saved on my BRZO app that cost roughly the same as the one I have on order.
The 911 is an LS swap done by Renegade Hybrids in Las Vegas too. It’s probably a blast to drive.
The Alfa is just pure Italian coolness
Bargain basement is a MKI GTI

I’m throwing a budget out the window for mine.
An old Mercedes Benz 600 pullman:
Then roll up to a private air port in the pullman driven by my chaffer, then take off in my Bell 206 Jet Ranger:

Hmmm... a car within my budget where the maintenance and reliability is magically taken car of and paid for... alrighty... then THIS is my choice - A Dino 246GT:
It... uhhh... needs a little bit of maintenance...

This damn thing has been sitting on my local CL for a while now. I’ve almost picked up the phone several times, because I do have $1800 to blow on a car. I don’t have the budget it would take to keep such a rare old thing that doesn’t share many parts with other vehicles and has a reputation for eating transmissions. Also it needs to be repainted badly. But damn if it were a bit more reliable of a car I’d be all over it.

Lotus eclat, Lancia beta, pushrod swapped 60s-80s Rolls-Royce or Jaguar, BMW e9, beetle-based ratrod, or 80s Maserati. Maybe even a track focused Alfa. holy Jesus I want one so bad. if I didn’t need a DD (or had the focus to finish other projects) I would totally sell my e24 and begin a restomod project.
BMW could use less stance, but you get the point.

There was one just like this that I considered for a while. I like the svx but I don’t often hear good things about them. It’s probably for the best that I never inquired.

Alfa Romeo GTV6, a rough but mechanically strong one.
‘63, 4, or 5 Ford Galaxie 500 2-door, also less than perfect cosmetically but with good mechanicals.
BMW E3 Bavaria, same deal.
Can’t afford properly nice versions of anything I like, so rough ones it is.

I would pick up a 2005ish Maserati Gransport with a manual. If I wanted to have a car payment, I could swing a 25-30k car. Despite having turned wrenches for a living in the past, I don’t think I could afford to actually drive a Maserati. The parts cost would eat me alive and leave me on the shoe leather express at some point. Me replacing the corvette with a 996 in the next year or two is more likely.

My entire cars.com favorites list is currently comprised of cars that are *technically* within my likely budget for my next car but are in no way affordable to run. Highlights include:
I like cheap lux and I cannot lie. All of these very close to the same price as a new base-level Camry.

The Phaeton is a little on the nose, but the true prize here is admittedly the CLS.
![]() 12/04/2016 at 02:11 |

I’m glad I’m not the only one who likes it. A lot of people think the first gen CLS has aged horribly, bu I just think that’s because most of them haven’t been well looked after. A properly cared for example like that is a graceful machine.

IMO, you take the rear of the 1st gen, and slap on the face of the 2nd gen, you have the perfect looking Mercedes, even with the “jellybean” arch in the center.

This list is good

I have to admit, I dig their look, and they’re not bad mechanically. The outward visibility sucks though. The facelifted and second gen CLSs don’t have that kind of dramatic style at all, they ruined it.

I’m currently interested in an RX3. A basic one should be in my budget.

Isn’t it though? I want one bad. front engine, v8, sidepipes, knock off wheels, lightweight-bare metal body, what’s not to love?
![]() 12/04/2016 at 03:24 |
|
My tastes are a bit odd.
I’d love a “Bullnose” 1980-85 F350 Crew Cab, 4x4 long bed. Swap in a modern diesel and it’s perfect.
Had to eliminate the other three choices because they would have killed my budget, my 401K and half of my future pension. I need to dream smaller anyway.
So here are the alternatives.
1G F150 Lightning.
Thunderbird Super Coupe. Preferably a 1995 with a 5 speed but any with solid rocker panels and a running engine will do.

What I’m considering ATM. Some thing fun with four seats in the 8-10k range. A Low mileage RSX Type S or of a bit over bigpdget and go with a Mazdaspeed3.
Ooor spend the same money on a ZZW30 MR-2 Spyder, and Buick Roadmaster wagon.
Wait I’ve done this all wrong. I’m still thinks to practically. If cost of ownership and reliability are really out the window, but I still have to stay with my budget, than I’ll go Triumph TR-6 and a E39 540i

Probably this:
CPO 2014 Audi RS7
.
Or maybe a 997 Porsche 911 Targa 4S with a manual.
